ISTAMBUL AND BEYOND: TABANLIOGLU ARCHITECTS
20 November – 22 December
Gallery 1, RIBA, 66 Portland Place, free entry
The Royal Institute of British Archtitects (RIBA) will present the exhibition Istanbul and Beyond: Selected
Projects of Tabanlioglu Architects, opening on 20 November. Completely film-based, this exhibition
brings to life the work of Tabanlioglu’s recent projects, some of the newest and most innovative buildings
in Turkey.
Tabanlioglu Architects is a leading Turkish practice based in Istanbul and known for its signature buildings
such as the Istanbul Modern (2004), the first modern museum in Turkey, and the Dogan TV Centre (2003).
Tabanlioglu also specialize in residential and mixed-use buildings, such as the Kanyon complex (2006)
and Levent Loft. They recently renovated the Ataturk Cultural Centre and the British Consulate
and are currently in the process of constructing the tallest high-rise building in Istanbul, Sapphire Tower.
Visitors to the exhibition will enter a corridor with three simultaneous projections which give a sense of being
suspended in space as they travel through Tabanlioglu buildings. The exhibition examines 19 of their
domestic projects under four themes: media, boulevard, culture and beyond. Other projection films will
also be used to reveal the various hidden details of each architectural design.

The film is brough to the exhibition by the Japanese company WOW, a visual design studio based
