The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) will be holding its Learning and Skills Sector Forum
Conference and RIBA/LSC Further Education Design Excellence Awards 2009 on 31 March 2009.

This year’s conference is themed Building Colleges for our students’ future, and features a choice
of six workshops which cover pertinent issues to building for education, including:
> Inclusive accessible design
> LSC framework: what colleges need to know
> How to keep the business going
> Ensuring an effective handover
> Integrating information & learning technology: the how and the when
> Staff Skills – making the most of your new build: where to get advice, guidance and support

Held annually in partnership with the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), the RIBA/LSC Further Education
Design Excellence Awards recognise the buildings which deliver the most effective and innovative
learning environment in a Further Education building.

The following buildings are shortlisted for the awards:
> Middlesbrough College designed by Archial Architects LTD
> York College designed by Bond Bryan
> Highfields Automotive & Engineering Centre designed by Hawkins Brown Architects
> Joseph Chamberlain College designed by Nicholas Hare Architects LLP
> National Skills Academy for Finance designed by The Tooley & Foster Partnership

The winners will be announced at a ceremony at the RIBA following the conference. The winning architects
or architectural teams will be awarded £5,000 as a first prize. The second prize is £2,000; the entry
which best addresses the sustainability agenda will be awarded a £2,000 special prize.

Andy Wilson, Chair of the RIBA Learning & Skills Sector Forum said:

“The RIBA Learning & Skills Sector Client Forum's annual conference will bring those leading capital projects
and industry professionals together to explore how the current investment in FE infrastructure will ensure
high quality educational buildings for generations to come. This year more new FE buildings are available
as exemplars than ever before, and the imperative to learn from those involved in these projects is more
important than ever before as uncertainties over funding increase the pressure to ensure value for money.
This year’s conference provides opportunities to hear from influential speakers; consider projects shortlisted
for this year's RIBA/LSC Award; and address practical issues in workshops.”
