Extra funding awarded to RIBA Norman Foster Travelling Scholarship Posted: 22 January 2009

EXTRA FUNDING AWARDED TO RIBA NORMAN FOSTER TRAVELLING SCHOLARSHIP

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) today announces that Foster + Partners have generously
donated an extra £100,000 to the endowment of the RIBA Norman Foster Travelling Scholarship, enabling
the scheme to run annually.

Initially set up in 2006 as a biennial programme, the £6,000 scholarship is awarded to one student to fund
international research on a topic and in a location of their choice. Their findings will be presented in a report –
which may be photographic, graphic or written - to be displayed at an exhibition at the RIBA and available
to view in the RIBA Library.

The winner of the 2007 scholarship was Ben Masterton-Smith, from the Bartlett School of Architecture,
with the project 'Emerging East: Exploring and Experiencing the East Asian Communist City', and in 2008
Faizan Siddiqi, from Ritzvi College of Architecture, Mumbai, India, travelled to research on the 'Role
of Public Transport in Shaping Sustainable Humane Habitats: Case Studies Across Three Continents'.

The scholarship has attracted numerous submissions by students enrolled or recently graduated from Schools
of Architecture validated by the RIBA all over the world. The 2009 scholarship is currently being advertised
in the 110 Schools of Architecture validated by the RIBA in 25 countries.

Speaking today, Lord Foster said:

“It is a real privilege to fund the Travelling Scholarship and I have been thrilled to see it generate high quality
work from talented individuals. The success of the Scholarship has prompted the additional donation, which
will allow the scheme to run annually, giving more students the opportunity to benefit from it.”

RIBA President Sunand Prasad said:

“I am delighted that Foster + Partners have decided to increase the amount of the endowment. This is terrific
news to allow for more students to benefit from this very creative initiative.”
