STORE AND SHARE. MUSEUMS AND LIBRARIES IN FINLAND

The exhibition introduces eight Finnish places of memory–four museums and four libraries–from 1998–2008.
Located around Finland, they include five new buildings, a renovation and extension, an alteration and
a competition entry. Also included is a brief historical survey of Finnish museums and libraries.

Museums and libraries are important public buildings. They are places for accrued information and experience
to be stored and then shared by everybody. A readily accessible memory base is the foundation of our
civilisation. Finland boasts a dense network of museums and libraries, and particularly the municipal libraries,
which everyone can enjoy free of charge, are popularly frequented.

Places of collective memory embody the cultural conception of their time. Nowadays they are expected
to possess both dignity and cosiness, both silence and stimulation, both enlightenment and entertainment.
Museums are now also touristic sights, and libraries are used like living rooms. Memory institutions also
need to accommodate to the enormous abundance of information in today's society as well as the rapid
advance in information and presentation technologies.

The exhibition is accompanied by a 72-page book with texts in English and Finnish: Store and Share.
Museums and Libraries in Finland – Muistin paikat. Suomen museot ja kirjastot. It is available at the museum
bookshop for 15 euros.

The exhibition was first presented at the Venice Biennale of Architecture in autumn 2008. An extended
version of the exhibition will be seen in Helsinki with new complementary material.
