ABOUT 3XN

3XN is an internationally active Danish architectural firm renowned for the win of number of international
architectural competitions. Among the recent projects are the new Deutsche Bahn headquarters, the Cube,
in Berlin, a cultural centre in Mandal in Norway, a theatre and jazz venue in Molde, also in Norway,
the Museum of Liverpool, Ørestad Gymnasium in Copenhagen, the City Hall of Nieuwegein in the Netherlands,
the Alsion/University of Southern Denmark in Sønderborg, Denmark, the Tivoli Concert Hall in Copenhagen.
Other significant buildings are the Danish Embassy in Berlin, the Architects’ House in Copenhagen, and the
Glass Museum in Ebeltoft.

Thus, major cultural centres, institutions, corporate headquarters, and combined housing and office buildings
comprise the centre piece of our portfolio. We consider the participation in architectural competitions an
important activity, as it enables us professionally to maintain edge and stay innovative.

With more than 20 years of experience in the whole range of scales from industrial design to master plans,
and of every stage of the working process from design sketching and digital planning to project management
and supervision, one of our strengths is the ability to realise the architectural visions of the drawings entered
into competitions on time and within the budget framework. Working on the basis of thorough analyses and
research processes, we always involve the client, professional consultants, and end-users of the building in
the process dialogue. In order to strengthen this dialogue, we have recently set up a research and
development department focusing on new materials and technologies, and added a new volume to
the continuous publication of our method and projects, ‘Investigate, Ask, Tell, Draw, Build’ (Black Dog
Publishing, London 2007.) For more details on our work, please visit www.3xn.com. We are based in two
offices at Kystvejen in Århus and at Strandgade in Copenhagen. In the case of working abroad, we set
up temporary project offices or participate in workshops with our partner offices.

In recent years we have received several awards and invitations to exhibit and publish our work. Recently
Ørestad Gymnasium won the 2008 ForumAID ”Best building in Scandinavia” award. In 2007, this building
received the Copenhagen Cultural Foundation prize for “Good and Beautiful Buildings”. For the Amsterdam
concert hall, Muziekgebouw we received the 2006 Bouw Award for the best new building in the Netherlands,
and that year the same building won the renowned Dedalo Minosse Prize. In 2006, we also received the
Architectural Review’s Future Projects Award for two projects: a residential complex in Copenhagen,
Nordhavnen Boliger, and for the Middelfart Sparkasse bank domicile. Our design for the Museum of Liverpool
won Silver Medal at the 2005 Miami Architectural Biennale, and the DGI centre in Vejle, Denmark, won the
International Olympic Committee’s IOC/IAKS Silver Medal for outstanding sports facilities, thus being the first
building in Denmark to receive the award. For the Sampension domicile in Gentofte, Copenhagen, we received
the distinguished Riba Award; again that was the first time this prize was awarded to a Danish project.
At the 2004 Venice Architectural Biennale, 3XN was invited to present three projects:

Slussen in Stockholm; our proposal for a new concert hall for the national Danish Broadcasting Corporation,
and the new Sparekassen Kronjylland bank in Randers, Denmark. Principal architect of 3XN, Kim Herforth
Nielsen, has been awarded the Eckersberg Medal has been honoured with the Knight’s Cross of the Order
of the Dannebrog.
